Furthermore, the Guanfo sanmei jing states: The Buddha said: In Jambudvīpa and throughout the four continents, there is a garuḍa named the Garuḍa King, who enjoys great sovereignty among all birds. By the karmic retribution of this bird, it must eat nāgas. In Jambudvīpa it eats one nāga king and five hundred small nāgas each day. On the second day [it does so] in Pūrvavideha, on the third day in Aparagodānīya, and on the fourth day in Uttarakuru, eating as before in each. Cycling through them, eight thousand years pass. At that time, the signs of death appear for this bird. The nāgas spit poison so that it can find no food. Pressed by hunger, the bird flutters around seeking food but can find none at all. Roaming among the mountains, it never finds peace. Arriving at the Vajra Mountain, it then briefly stops. From the Vajra Mountain it goes straight down to the edge of the great waters, and from the edge of the great waters to the edge of the wind circle; blown by the wind, it returns to the Vajra Mountain. Having done so seven times, its life then ends. When its life ends, because of its poison, fire breaks out simultaneously on the ten jewel mountains. At that time, the Nāga King Nanda, fearing the burning of these mountains, sends down torrential rain pouring like cart-axles. The bird's flesh is completely dispersed, leaving only its heart. Its heart falls straight down, repeating the previous seven cycles, and then comes to rest on the summit of the Vajra Mountain. The Nāga King Nanda takes this bird's heart as a luminous pearl, and a wheel-turning king obtains it as a cintāmaṇi.
