The ninth intermediate state: If a person of Godānīya dies and is born in heaven, there are two kinds of karma. What are the two? The first is residual karma, and the second is productive karma for birth in the heavens. When that person approaches the end of life, signs appear: due to wholesome karma, when on the verge of giving up life, their breath is not choked or turbid, their veins are not broken or ruined, and their sense faculties are pure. They see a great pool of water, its water temperate and flowing broadly, and float to the other shore. Having reached the other shore, they see heavenly maidens of foremost beauty, with various adornments, playfully laughing, singing, and dancing. Having seen them, that person's mind of desire seeks intimacy; stepping forward to embrace the woman, they are immediately born in heaven and experience heavenly pleasure, and as in a dream the intermediate state is extinguished. This is called the ninth intermediate state. (The birth of people of Godānīya has three grades of karma—superior, middling, and inferior—which share one and the same radiance and an identical intermediate state, all alike, unlike the distinct signs of the three kinds of rebirth for people of Uttarakuru.)
