Eleventh, regarding the intermediate existence: when the evil karma of pretas and the like has been exhausted, they receive the remainder of good karma. The good karma originally performed in other destinies is like parents to them. When they are about to be reborn among the devas, signs appear. If one dies among the pretas and is to be reborn in heaven, whereas among the pretas hunger and thirst burned the body, one constantly craved food, and one constantly longed for drink, when life is about to end one no longer gives rise to such thoughts; one's former thoughts are entirely extinguished. No evil karma at all comes near. Though one sees food and drink, one only gazes at it with one's eyes, like a person in a dream seeing food and drink but not consuming it. Seeing heaven to be delightful, one immediately runs toward it. Arriving there, one is immediately born in heaven. This is called the eleventh intermediate existence.
