Furthermore, the Zabaozang jing states: At that time, a ghost said to Maudgalyāyana: "Venerable One, my belly is extremely large like a jar, but my throat, hands, and feet are as thin as needles, and I cannot obtain food or drink. For what cause and condition do I suffer such pain?" Maudgalyāyana replied, saying: "In your previous life, you were a village chieftain. Relying on your haughtiness and noble status, you drank wine uncontrollably, despising and mistreating others, seizing their food and drink, starving and distressing sentient beings. By this cause and condition, you receive such punishment. This is the flower retribution; the bitter fruit of the hells is yet to come."
