Therefore, the Bodhisattvabhūmi-śāstra states: "The sin of sexual misconduct also causes sentient beings to fall into the three evil destinies. If born among humans, they receive two kinds of retributions: first, one's wife is unchaste; second, one obtains a retinue that does not accord with one's wishes. Why does sexual misconduct lead to falling into the hells? Because sexual misconduct trespasses beyond one's proper bounds and infringes upon others to their torment; therefore, when life ends, one receives the suffering of the hells. Why does sexual misconduct result in emerging as an animal? Because sexual misconduct does not accord with human principles; therefore, upon emerging from hell, one receives an animal body. Why does sexual misconduct further lead to becoming a hungry ghost? Because lust and debauchery all stem from stinginess and craving; through the sin of stinginess and craving, one further becomes a hungry ghost. Why, with sexual misconduct, is one's wife unchaste? Because one violated another's wife; hence the wife one obtains is always unchaste. Why, with sexual misconduct, does one not obtain a retinue that accords with one's wishes? Because by sexual misconduct one seized another's beloved; hence one's retinue does not accord with one's wishes, and so they are again seized by others. One should know that sexual misconduct is the third great suffering."
