Therefore the Bodhisattvabhūmi says: The sin of greed and desire also causes sentient beings to fall into the three evil destinies. If born among humans, they receive two kinds of retribution: first, having abundant desires; second, never having satisfaction. Why does greed and desire lead to falling into hell? Because their greed and desire set in motion body and speech, thereby causing suffering to living beings; therefore, upon the death of the body they suffer the pains of hell. Why does greed and desire lead to emerging as an animal? Because this greed and desire in its movements contradicted human principles; therefore, emerging from hell they become animals. Why does greed and desire further lead to becoming a hungry ghost? Because due to this greed and desire, whatever they obtain they inevitably hoard greedily; due to the sin of greedy hoarding, they become hungry ghosts. Why does greed and desire lead to having abundant desires? Because of this greed and desire, what they desire becomes ever more manifold. Why does greed and desire cause one to have no satisfaction? Because of this greed and desire, their greedy seeking knows no satiety. One should know that greed and desire brings about the eighth great suffering.
