“Sensual desire is truly suffering;
ordinary people, perverted and upside down,
falsely give rise to the notion of pleasure.
The wise see the suffering;
seeing the suffering, they sever it.
Indulging in desires without satiety
is like drinking salt water:
it only increases one’s thirst.
Because it increases thirst,
how could there be any pleasure?
Just as a dog gnawing
a dry bone smeared with blood,
mixing it with its own saliva,
fancies that it has delicious flavor—
sensual desire is also like this:
where there is no flavor,
through the force of perversion,
one claims to experience flavor.
Therefore know that sensual desire
is truly suffering and falsely pleasurable;
only when there is no covetous seeking
can it be called true bliss.”
