“Those who utter false speech
afflict all sentient beings.
They are constantly like darkness;
though having life, they are the same as dead.
With the knife of words they cut their own tongues—
why do their tongues not fall out?
If one utters false speech,
one loses real merit.
If a person speaks false words,
there is a venomous serpent in their mouth.
A knife abides in their mouth;
blazing fire burns within their mouth.
The poison in the mouth is [real] poison;
the poison upon a serpent is not poison.
The poison of the mouth cuts sentient beings;
at the end of life they fall into hell.
If a person speaks false words,
pus emerges from their own mouth;
the tongue is murky mud,
and the tongue is also like a blazing fire.
If a person utters false and slanderous words,
that person is quickly despised and demeaned.
They are abandoned by good people,
and the gods do not protect them.
They constantly hate and envy others,
inflicting evil upon all sentient beings.
By expedients they disturb others,
and because of this they enter hell.”
