“Amṛta and virulent poison
are both within a person’s tongue.
Amṛta is called true speech;
false speech is then poison.
If a person needs amṛta,
that person abides in true speech.
If a person needs poison,
that person speaks false speech.
Poison does not bring certain death;
false speech brings certain death.
If a person speaks false speech,
they may be called a dead person.
False speech brings no benefit to oneself,
nor does it benefit others.
If it gives no joy to oneself or others,
why speak false speech?
If a person with evil discrimination
rejoices in speaking false words,
they fly and fall upon fire and knives,
receiving such suffering and torment.
Though virulent poison is exceedingly wicked,
it can kill only a single body.
One of evil karma through false speech
has hundreds of thousands of bodies destroyed.”
