Also, the Avadānaśataka says: “There was an elder's wife who was pregnant. Her body was so foul and filthy that no one could approach her. When her term was full she bore a son whose skeletal frame was exposed, emaciated and haggard, unbearable to look upon. Moreover, he was born smeared with abundant feces. As he gradually grew older, he did not want to stay at home, but craved feces and filth, unwilling to leave them. His parents and relatives detested him and did not wish to see him, driving him far from the house so that he could not approach. He then stayed outside, constantly eating feces. When people saw this, they gave him the name Gambhīra. Encountering the Buddha, he went forth from household life and attained the fruit of arhatship. This was because in a past life, when a Buddha named Krakucchanda appeared in the world, he had gone forth and become a monastery director. There were donors who, having bathed the saṅgha, anointed their bodies with fragrant oil. There was an arhat; when the monastery director saw him, he became angry and cursed him: ‘You who have gone forth, anointing your body with fragrant oil is just like smearing human feces upon your body!’ The arhat took pity on him and manifested supernatural transformations for him. When the monastery director saw this, he repented and apologized, wishing to eliminate his sin and fault. Due to this evil reviling, for five hundred lifetimes his body was constantly foul and filthy, impossible to approach. Because he had formerly gone forth and repented to him, he was now able to encounter me, go forth, and attain the Way. Therefore, sentient beings should guard the karma of the mouth and not revile one another.”
