The Buddha addressed Ānanda:
Human life in the world—calamity emerges from the mouth.
One should guard the mouth
More strictly than fierce fire.
When a fierce fire blazes,
It burns worldly wealth;
When harsh speech blazes,
It burns the seven noble treasures.
For all sentient beings,
Calamity emerges from the mouth;
It is the axe that cleaves the body,
The disaster that destroys the person.
