'I now give you this verse. If he becomes angry and dislikes the food as bad, go beside him, turn your back, and chant it softly so that he can hear it.' Having given this instruction, he then returned to his own country. After this slave sent his master away, whenever it came time to eat, he would again become angry. The wife, beside her husband, tried chanting the verse. When the husband heard this verse, his heart was immediately displeased, and he thought: 'Bah! This old fellow has exposed my stench!' From then on, he always spoke gentle words, seeking to keep his wife from becoming angry, fearing that his wife would tell people his secrets. The Buddha told the monks: 'The former master, the brāhmaṇa Purohita at that time, was myself. The slave Kalaha at that time was the present monk Channa. At that time, he already relied on me to bully others; now it is also like this: he relies on my power and authority to mistreat others.'
