Now, the supreme Way has no barrier; what is valued lies in loyal words. Thus, if the words one utters are good, they are echoed from a thousand li away; if the words one utters are not good, even at close quarters people are as if deaf. However, as the teaching flows down to the degenerate age, people and the Dharma become corrupt and deteriorate. Some rely on the true to fabricate the false; some adorn the empty to fake the real. This is truly because people harbor the crooked and the correct, and therefore the Dharma has the real and the fake. Once fame and profit encroach, self and others become ever more prominent. Even present intimates have none to attach to them, let alone those who were originally distant and estranged; thus it is hard to make friends. Therefore the sūtra says: 'A straightforward mind is the site of awakening (bodhimaṇḍa), because it is free of falsity and pretense.'
