The commentary states: One must not take the preceding text's permission as an all-inclusive excuse to drink indiscriminately. There must truly be a grave and critical illness bordering on death, where other medicines have first been used to treat it without cure, and liquor must be blended in to achieve a cure; only then is it permitted according to the preceding text. Recently, one sees ignorant persons of robust bodily strength running about daily, not complying with the assembly's deportment; at the slightest minor ailment, they foster cravings and attachments, neglecting their cultivation of the Path. They falsely cite the sūtras and Vinaya, claiming: “The Buddha permitted various medicinal decoctions and famous, superior robes to be offered to the Buddha and the saṅgha,” using public pretexts for private gains, deceiving both monastics and laity. Therefore, the wise safeguard the precepts like their very lives, not daring to violate them.
