"Only after reciting this incantation three times may one eat meat. One would not even eat cooked rice; why? Because if one contemplates that cooked rice should not be eaten, how much less should one eat meat!" The Buddha told Mañjuśrī: "Because sentient beings lack the power of maitrī-karuṇā and harbor murderous thoughts, for this reason I cut off meat-eating. If one can harbor no harmful thoughts, [possess] the mind of great maitrī-karuṇā, and [act] for the sake of transforming all sentient beings, then there is no transgression."
