Ninth, explaining that even pure [food] should not be craved, how much less so impure meat! Therefore, practitioners should not eat meat. As that sūtra says: 'I teach that when ordinary persons eat pure food in pursuit of a pure livelihood, they should still generate the thought of it being like the flesh of their own child; how much less would I allow them to eat what is not the food of noble ones! Noble ones are free from attachment. Because meat can produce immeasurable faults against all supramundane merits, how could it be said that I permit my disciples to consume the impure flavors of meat and blood? Those who say I permit it are slandering me.' Therefore the internal Vinaya states that consuming raw meat, blood, and the like incurs a thullaccaya (grave) offence.
