Furthermore, the Śrāmaṇerikā Precept Sūtra says: 'You must not kill living beings. Show maitrī-karuṇā to all living beings as parents care for their child; pity wriggling insects as if they were newborn infants. What is non-killing? Guarding body, mouth, and mind. With the body, do not step on humans, beasts, or any breathing creatures; do not do it with the hands, nor teach others to do so. If you see it killed, do not eat it; if you hear it was killed, do not eat it; if you suspect it was killed [for you], do not eat it; if it was killed for my sake, do not eat it. With the mouth, do not utter words like "kill them, harm them, take revenge"; nor should one say "a delightful death, a fine kill", or "such-and-such meat is fat, such-and-such meat is lean", or "such-and-such meat is plentiful and good, such-and-such meat is scarce and bad". In the mind, do not even think of it. Pity and care for sentient beings as one's own marrow, as one's father, mother, or child. With such impartiality, universally equal in single-mindedness, always set your resolve on the Mahāyāna.'
