Now, the great teaching is impartial, and supreme virtue is mutually sensed. The karmic actions of ordinary sentiment create disparate realms: mind and object run counter to each other, and the retributions of suffering and pleasure differ. Like a wax seal pressed into clay, when the seal is made, the imprint appears. Once the characteristics of karma are distinguished, by beholding the retribution it can be inferred. Thus it is that humans and animals are distinguished by their voices and habitats, foreigners and Chinese are distinguished by their bodily forms, the noble and the base have the distinction of high and low, and the sage and the ordinary have the difference of good and evil.
