"Second, there are sentient beings whose bodies are numb and paralyzed, whose eyebrows and beards fall out, and whose entire bodies fester and rot. Where birds roost and deer bed, human footprints are forever absent. They soil their relatives, and people take no pleasure in seeing them. This is called leprosy. What sin brought this about?" The Buddha said: "In their past lives, it was due to not having faith in the Three Jewels, not being filial to their parents, destroying stūpas and monasteries, stripping religious practitioners, hacking and shooting sages, harming teachers and elders, being constantly ungrateful, turning their backs on kindness and forgetting righteousness, always cleverly taking shortcuts, and committing incest without regard for high or low. Therefore they incurred this sinful retribution."
