Furthermore, as the Saddharmasmṛtyupasthāna-sūtra explains: The suffering in the Avīci Hell is a thousand times greater than that of the preceding seven great hells. The lifespan lasts for one kalpa. The body [of one who has committed five heinous offenses] is five hundred yojanas in height; for one who committed four heinous offenses, it is four hundred yojanas; for one who committed three heinous offenses, three hundred yojanas; for one who committed two heinous offenses, two hundred yojanas; and for one who committed one heinous offense, one hundred yojanas. When those persons who performed the karma of the five heinous offenses are on the verge of death, they cry out, lose control of their bowels, and gasp for breath in their throats. In such death and destruction, the intermediate state (antarābhava) takes form, yet cannot see its retribution; its body is like that of an eight-year-old child. King Yama binds its throat with a blazing iron noose and binds both hands. Head and face facing downward and feet facing upward, for two thousand years it moves ever downward. Many flaming garlands first burn its head, and next burn its body. If the devas of the six desire heavens were to catch the scent from that Avīci Hell, they would all instantly perish. Why? Because the people of the Avīci Hell emit an exceedingly great stench.
