Furthermore, the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra states: How does self-love arise? Because [the intermediate existence] has arisen immediately; because the causes of delighting in conceptual proliferation since beginningless time have been perfumed; because the causes of pure and impure karma have been perfumed. The body that is their basis, through the predominant power of these two kinds of causes, from seeds, immediately and without interval attains birth as a ripened result in the intermediate existence in that very place. At the time of death, it is like the two ends of a scale, tilting down and up at the same moment. And this intermediate existence must possess all the faculties. For one who has performed evil karma, the intermediate existence obtained is like the luster of a black sheep or a dark night; for one who has performed good karma, it is like the luster of white clothing or a clear and bright night. The Abhidharmakośa-śāstra states: This intermediate existence is fully endowed with the five faculties, and cannot be obstructed by vajra or the like. In the vajra beneath Mount Sumeru, there are frogs born therein; the subtle matter of intermediate existence cannot be obstructed by vajra. Those with the divine eye can see this matter. To further cite a matter that has been heard as proof: I have heard people say that when iron is heated until glowing, upon breaking it open, worms are seen inside.
