Fourth, concerning the speed or slowness of supernatural power: The Abhidharmakośa-śāstra states that this intermediate state travels through the void. Just as when a person relinquishes life and is due to take birth in an immeasurable world beyond, he arrives in an instant. The supernatural power of the two vehicles cannot yet depart from a single world, whereas the intermediate state has already arrived outside immeasurable worlds. Even the divine power of a Buddha cannot obstruct it, cause it not to go to its birth, or cause it to abide in another destiny, because the power of karma is fixed. What the treatise calls superior supernatural power is based on surpassing the supernatural powers of ordinary persons and the two vehicles. The Vibhāṣā-śāstra states that the superiority of the base of supernatural power is based on the swiftness of the Buddha's supernatural powers.
