As the Sūtra on Resolving Doubts Concerning the Semblance Dharma says: Even for all laypeople, regardless of high or low rank, they must not beat or strike the slaves, maidservants, or livestock of the Triratna, nor receive bows of homage from the slaves and maidservants of the Triratna; doing so brings calamities and faults. Therefore, the Satyaka-nirgrantha Sūtra says: If one destroys stūpas or monasteries, or takes the property of the Buddha, or instructs others to do so and rejoices in support; or if there are śramaṇas whose bodies are clad in dyed robes, whether they maintain the precepts or break the precepts, and one imprisons, beats, or binds them, or forces them to return to lay life, or cuts off their life—if one commits such root grave offenses, one will definitively fall into hell and suffer the torment of the Avīci Hell. Because of practicing such unwholesomeness within the king's realm, the ṛṣis and holy sages will depart from the country; the mighty deities will not protect the realm; ministers will contend and strive, rebellions will rise from all four quarters; floods and droughts will be discordant, wind and rain unseasonable; the people will suffer famine; bandits will run rampant; pestilence and diseases will strike, with countless deaths; yet they will not know this is of their own making and will blame the gods instead.
