Furthermore, the Upāsakaśīla-sūtra states: 'The Buddha said: One who abides in accordance with the Dharma can benefit both self and others; one who does not abide in accordance with the Dharma cannot be said to benefit self and others. One who abides in accordance with the Dharma possesses eight knowledges. What are the eight? First, knowledge of phenomena; second, knowledge of meaning; third, knowledge of time; fourth, knowledge of contentment; fifth, knowledge of self and other; sixth, knowledge of the assembly; seventh, knowledge of faculties; eighth, knowledge of superior and inferior. When this person is endowed with these eight knowledges, in whatever he preaches he is endowed with sixteen things: first, preaching at the proper time; second, preaching with earnest mind; third, preaching in sequential order; fourth, preaching in harmony; fifth, preaching in accord with meaning; sixth, preaching with joy; seventh, preaching as appropriate; eighth, preaching without disdaining the assembly; ninth, preaching without rebuking the assembly; tenth, preaching in accordance with the Dharma; eleventh, preaching for the benefit of self and others; twelfth, preaching without distraction; thirteenth, preaching matching the meaning; fourteenth, preaching truly and correctly; fifteenth, not giving rise to arrogance after preaching; sixteenth, not seeking future recompense after preaching. Such a person is able to listen from others.'
