"The great trichiliocosm / Filled within with rare jewels: / If one uses these for dāna, / The merit gained is small. / If one preaches a single verse of Dharma, / The merit is exceedingly great. / If one takes all the requisites of pleasure in the three realms / And gives them entirely to one person, / It does not equal the gift of a single verse; / The merit [of the verse] is supreme. / This merit surpasses that, / Being able to leave all suffering and affliction. / If worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges / Were filled within with rare jewels, / And given to all the Tathāgatas, / It would not equal the gift of a single Dharma. / Though the blessing of giving jewels is great, / It cannot match the gift of a single Dharma. / The blessing of a single verse is already superior; / How much more so many verses—inconceivable!"
