Furthermore, if a person who has left household life practices material giving, it obstructs other wholesome [practices]. They distance themselves from the araṇya (forest dwellings) and inevitably go into villages, dealing with white-robed laypeople and engaging in much talk, which arouses the three poisons; their mind toward the six pāramitās and so forth becomes weak, until they crave and cling to the five desires and abandon the precepts to return to lay life. Therefore it is called death. Or they may violate the precepts and easily commit grave offenses; these are called death and other such afflictions and sufferings. For this reason, for those who have left household life, the gift of the Dharma is praised, while for those at home, the gift of material wealth is praised.
