Furthermore, the *Upāsakaśīla-sūtra* says: "When listening from another, one should be endowed with sixteen things: first, listening at the proper time; second, listening with delight; third, listening with utmost sincerity; fourth, listening with reverence; fifth, listening without seeking faults; sixth, listening not for the sake of debate; seventh, listening not for the sake of victory; eighth, when listening, not disparaging the preacher; ninth, when listening, not disparaging the Dharma; tenth, when listening, never disparaging oneself; eleventh, when listening, remaining far from the five hindrances; twelfth, when listening, doing so to uphold and recite it; thirteenth, when listening, doing so to eliminate the five desires; fourteenth, when listening, doing so to perfect faith; fifteenth, when listening, doing so for the sake of all sentient beings; sixteenth, when listening, doing so to sever the roots of darkness. Good sons, one who possesses eight kinds of wisdom is able to preach and able to listen. Such a person can benefit both self and others. One who is not fully endowed with them cannot be said to benefit oneself and benefit others."
