The commentary says: At times there are monastics and laity of slight learning and shallow understanding who deem their wisdom superior to others. Even if they wish to cultivate and study, they do not focus on the internal scriptures, but only admire worldly books and non-Buddhist treatises. Thus in the Nirvāṇa-sūtra the Buddha said: "After my parinirvāṇa, there will be śrāvaka disciples who are foolish and break the precepts, fond of giving rise to quarrels, who will abandon the twelve divisions of scriptures to read and recite various non-Buddhist treatises, literary verses, and calligraphy, accepting and hoarding all kinds of impure things, claiming this is permitted by the Buddha. Such persons trade fine sandalwood for ordinary wood, exchange gold for brass, silver for pewter, fine silk for coarse felt and hemp, and exchange amṛta for vile poison."
