Reflecting that in the final age the Dharma has degenerated along with people, the monastics and the laity mix together, transmission of errors turns against the truth, and they associate indiscriminately. They do not cultivate the internal scriptures but exclusively attend to secular books. Even when they transcribe texts, their minds are not earnest and sincere; they neither keep them pure and clean, nor avoid many errors and blunders. They lodge together with them, or place them under the eaves of gates, showing no fear or dread at wind, rain, insects, or rodents. As a result, the scriptures lack efficacious efficacy and recitation yields no benefit of relieving suffering. This truly stems from insincere production, and also from excessive arrogance in self and others. Therefore, the Jingfu jing says: 'Good sons, when transcribing scriptures, one must not transpose hooked strokes or duplicate dots. [Otherwise,] for five hundred lifetimes one will fall into paths of delusion and confusion, and not hear the true Dharma.'
