When a Dharma master ascends the seat, he must first pay homage to the Triratna, purify his own mind, observe the time and select the audience, have the intention of compassion, and rescue and benefit living beings; only then should he preach. Therefore the Bao'en jing says: 'If the listener sits while the preacher stands, one should not preach for him. If the listener seeks faults in the preacher, one should not preach for him. If the listener relies on the person and not on the Dharma, relies on the letter and not on the meaning, relies on sūtras of provisional meaning and not on sūtras of definitive meaning, relies on consciousness and not on wisdom, for all such one should not preach. Why? Because such a person cannot venerate the pure Dharma of all the buddhas and bodhisattvas. If one preaches with respect for the Dharma, the listener will also give rise to reverence and listen with earnest mind without giving rise to disdain. This is called pure preaching.'
