The Buddha addressed the bhikṣus: 'Sentient beings wander through the long night of beginningless saṃsāra, not knowing the original limit of suffering. There is no single place where one has not been born and has not died. Such is the wandering through the long night of beginningless saṃsāra, not knowing the original limit of suffering. Nor is there any place where one has not had parents, brothers, wives, children, dependents, kinsmen, teachers, and elders. Just as when heavy rain falls, bubbles arise and vanish, so too are sentient beings veiled by ignorance and with craving binding the neck; they wander through the long night, not knowing the original limit of suffering. Just as when heavy rain pours over the whole sky, without interruption in the east, west, south, or north, so too in the immeasurable lands of the four directions, in the formation and destruction of kalpas, just as heavy rain pours across all under heaven without interruption, they wander through the long night, not knowing the original limit of suffering. Just as when a stick is thrown into the air, sometimes the tip hits the ground, sometimes the tail hits the ground, and sometimes the middle hits the ground, so too in wandering through the long night of beginningless saṃsāra, sometimes one falls into hell, sometimes into the animal realm, and sometimes into the hungry ghost realm.'
