Furthermore, by the wisdom acquired from hearing, or with the divine eye, one sees the sleep-craving worm. Its shape is minute, like dust in a sunbeam. It dwells in all vessels, circulating through the pathways [of the body], dwelling within the bone marrow, or dwelling within the flesh, or within the skull, or inside the cheeks, or inside the jawbones, or in the throat bones, or in the ears, or in the eyes, or in the nose, or in the sideburns and hair. This sleep-craving worm is swept and circulated by the wind. If this worm falls ill or becomes utterly exhausted, it stays in the heart. The heart is like a lotus flower: it opens during the day, and because there is no sunlight, it closes again at night. The heart is also like this. When the worm stays within it, grasping at many sense objects until the sense faculties are utterly exhausted, the worm falls asleep, and the human also falls asleep. All sentient beings possess sleep. When this sleep-worm becomes utterly exhausted during the daytime, the human also falls asleep.
