Also, the Vinayamātṛkā states: “There are two kinds of gas: the first is upward gas; the second is downward gas. When upward gas is about to emerge, one must not open the mouth to let it out facing others; one must turn the face toward a place where no one is present and open the mouth to let it out. When downward gas is about to emerge, it is not permitted to release it amidst the assembly; one must use expedient means to go outside to an unoccupied place to let it out, and only then return and enter the assembly. Do not cause the assembly to give rise to censure, revulsion, or contempt. When entering a stūpa, one should not pass downward gas. Under a tree where a stūpa is enshrined and amidst a great assembly, one must not allow gas to be passed in any case. In front of one's master, a venerable person, or a senior monk, one must also not pass downward wind with sound. If one has an urgent ailment in the bowels, one should go outside; do not cause people to produce thoughts of revulsion or contempt.”
