As stated in the Bodhisattva-caryā-sūtra: Long ago, when the Buddha was in the world, the Buddha and Ānanda entered the city of Śrāvastī to walk for alms. At that time, a brāhmaṇa in that city came from outside and saw the Buddha leaving the city, his radiant marks majestic and towering. Thereupon, the brāhmaṇa leaped for joy, circumambulated the Buddha once, made obeisance, and departed. The Buddha then smiled and said to Ānanda, 'This brāhmaṇa saw the Buddha with joy and, with a pure mind, circumambulated the Buddha once. By virtue of this merit, from now on, he will not fall into evil destinies for twenty-five kalpas, enjoying boundless happiness among gods and humans. After the completion of twenty-five kalpas, he will become a pratyekabuddha named Candanagiri.' Because of this cause and condition, if a person circumambulates the Buddha or circumambulates a Buddha stupa, wherever they are born, they will obtain immeasurable blessings.
