Furthermore, the Sengqi lü (Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya) says: The Buddha said, "From this day forward I permit lighting lamps. When doing so, one should place the fire on one side and light them gradually in order. One should first illuminate the relics and Buddha images. Having first bowed, one should light them in sequence. When extinguishing them in other places, one must not extinguish them abruptly. One should say, 'Venerables, I wish to extinguish the lamps.' It is not permitted to blow them out with the mouth (The commentary says: Because there are fire-eating insects, fearing that the breath of a person's mouth might harm the insects, blowing with the mouth is not permitted). It is permitted to fan them out with the hand, or fan them out with a garment. One should pinch off the charred tip of the wick. When entering, one must not enter abruptly; one should announce, 'Venerables, the lamps are about to enter,' and only then may one enter with them. If it is not done like this, it violates the rules of deportment."
