Furthermore, the Pusa benxing jing says: Long ago, when the Buddha was in the world, he was wandering among villages from the kingdom of Uruvilvā together with the bhikṣus and Ānanda. At that time, the heat was intense and there was no shade. A shepherd, seeing the Buddha travelling through the heat, immediately aroused a pure mind, wove grass into a canopy, and used it to cover the Buddha. Wandering along in the Buddha's footsteps, he went very far from his sheep. Putting down the canopy and tossing it to the ground, he returned to his sheep. The Buddha then smiled and told Ānanda: "This shepherd, with a reverent mind, used a grass canopy to cover the Buddha. Through this merit, for thirteen eons he will not fall into the evil destinies; born into noble families in heaven and among humans, his joy will be limitless, and a canopy of the seven jewels will spontaneously and constantly remain above him. When the thirteen eons are completed, he will go forth, cultivate the path, and become a pratyekabuddha named Anubodhi."
