The Ekottarika-āgama also says: The Bhagavat addressed Aniruddha, saying: "All phenomena subsist through nutriment. The eye takes sleep as its nutriment; the ear takes sound as its nutriment; the nose takes odor as its nutriment; the tongue takes taste as its nutriment; the body takes smoothness as its nutriment; the mind takes mental objects as its nutriment; and nirvāṇa takes diligence as its nutriment." At that time, the Buddha addressed the bhikṣus: "Such is this wonderful Dharma. Now in observing nutriment, there are nine matters. In the human realm, there are four nutriments: first, solid nutriment; second, contact nutriment; third, volition nutriment; fourth, consciousness nutriment. There are further five kinds which are supramundane nutriments: first, meditation nutriment; second, vow nutriment; third, mindfulness nutriment; fourth, eight liberations nutriment; and fifth, joy nutriment. These are the supramundane nutriments. You should together focus your mindfulness on relinquishing and removing the four kinds of nutriment, and seek to achieve the supramundane nutriments."
