The commentary states: All Saṃgha food must be equal, distributed evenly and universally without distinguishing between ordinary and noble, higher or lower. Therefore, the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya states: "If a dānapati provides food and offers more to the senior seat, the senior seat should ask, 'Does the entire Saṃgha receive this much?' If the reply is, 'Only the senior seat receives it,' he should say, 'Give equally to all.' If the reply is, 'All receive it,' he should accept it. According to the rule for the senior seat of the Saṃgha, he must not eat as soon as food is served to him; he must wait until the circulation is completed and equal offerings are announced before he may eat. According to the rule for the senior seat, he should eat slowly and must not finish quickly and leave ahead of others; he should wait for the distribution of water, recite the benediction accordingly, and only then depart."
