'"First, did you not see that when people in the world are newly born as infants, lying helplessly in feces and urine, unable to protect themselves, their mouths unable to speak, knowing neither good nor bad? Did you see this or not?" The person replies, "I have seen it." The king says: "You thought yourself unlike this. Yet when the spirit of man departs from there, immediately upon dying there is rebirth. Although you had not yet seen [your own future], you should always have done good and uprighted your three karmic doors. How could you give rein to your mind and indulge your desires to commit faults?" The guilty person replies, "In foolishness and darkness, I did not know." The king says: "You were foolish yourself, indulging in laxity to commit evil; it is not the fault of parents, teachers, elders, rulers, gods, śramaṇas, or men of the Way. The guilt originates entirely from you; how could you not gladly receive it now?" This is King Yama revealing the first divine messenger.'
