Also, the Śāriputraparipṛcchā-sūtra says: 'The Buddha said: "When receiving precepts, one may make offerings according to one's means, without limit on amount." Mañjuśrī said to the Buddha: "Why does the Tathāgata say that the kindness of parents is great and cannot go unrepaid, and also say that the kindness of teachers and the Saṃgha is immeasurable? Which of them is supreme?" The Buddha said: "For householders, filial service to parents at their knees cannot be equaled by any repayment for birth and upbringing; because the kindness of birth and upbringing is profound, it is spoken of as great. If one learns from a teacher to develop knowledge and vision, that is next in greatness. For those who leave the household, casting away parents and the household of birth and death to enter the gate of Dharma and receive the subtle and wonderful Dharma is through the teacher's power. Nurturing the dharmakāya and producing the wealth of merit to sustain the life of wisdom, the teacher's merit is unmatched; looking back to those who gave birth to them, they come next."'
