The Futian jing also states: "There was a bhikṣu named Ānanda, who addressed the Bhagavat, saying: 'Recalling my past lives, I was born in the country of Rājagṛha as the child of a commoner. Malignant sores broke out on my body that could not be cured by treatment. A monk who was a relative and friend came and said to me: "You should bathe the saṃgha, take their bathwater, and wash the sores with it; you will then obtain recovery and will also gain merit." Rejoicing, I immediately went to the monastery. With heightened reverence and utmost sincerity, I made a new well, fragrant oils, and bathing implements, and bathed the saṃgha. Washing the sores with the water, I immediately received relief and healing. By virtue of these causes and conditions, wherever I was born, I was dignified, radiant with golden light, and untouched by dust and grime. For ninety-one kalpas, I constantly enjoyed pure merit, and its blessings and protection extended far and wide. Now I have again encountered the Buddha; the defilements of my mind have been extinguished, and I have attained the status of an arhat.'"
