Furthermore, the Maitreyaparipṛcchā-dharmaparyāya states: The Buddha told Ānanda: "When I originally sought the Way, my toil and suffering were countless. In a past age, there was a king's prince named Ratnapuṣpa, upright and handsome. Coming out of a pleasure garden, he saw a man on the road suffering from leprosy. Seeing him, he asked the sick man: 'What kind of medicine will cure your illness?' The leper answered: 'If I obtain the marrow and blood of a king's body to smear on myself, the illness will be cured.' Having heard this, the prince immediately broke open his own body, taking bone marrow, blood, and the like, to give to the sick man. He gave with a sincere mind, without regret. That king's prince was myself. The waters of the four great oceans can still be measured by pints, but the bone marrow and blood of my bodies cannot be counted, all for the sake of seeking saṃbodhi."
