Furthermore, the Ekottarika-āgama says: At that time, the Bhagavat addressed the bhikṣus: "There are four kinds of Brahmā-merit. What are the four? If a faithful person can erect a stūpa (that is, a pagoda) where no stūpa has ever been built, this is receiving the first Brahmā-merit. If a faithful person can repair an old monastery, this is called receiving the second Brahmā-merit. If a faithful person can bring harmony to the noble assembly, this is called receiving the third Brahmā-merit. When a Buddha first turns the wheel of the Dharma, if devas and humans urge and request the turning of the wheel of the Dharma, this is called receiving the fourth Brahmā-merit." At that time, a certain bhikṣu said to the Bhagavat: "Just how great is the merit of Brahmā?" The Bhagavat replied: "The merit of all sentient beings on the earth of Jambudvīpa, and so on progressively from the Four Heavenly Kings up to the Paranirmitavaśavartin Heaven, is still not equal to the merit of a single Brahmā king. If you seek its measure, this is its amount."
