1.36

晉孝武之世。有罽賓國沙門僧伽跋澄。譯雜毘曇婆沙十四卷。次則姚秦羅什譯大智度成實。此為譯論之始。道安錄及僧祐出三藏記同斯楷述也。又單名鞞婆沙。是者迦旃延子撮其要義引經訓釋。為毘曇四十四品。斯亦論也。

During the reign of Emperor Xiaowu of the Jin, the śramaṇa Saṅghadeva of Kashmir translated the Za apitan pibosha (Saṃyuktābhidharma-vibhāṣā) in fourteen fascicles. Next, Kumārajīva of the Yao-Qin translated the Dazhidulun (Mahāprajñāpāramitopadeśa) and the Chengshilun (Tattvasiddhi-śāstra); these were the beginnings of translating treatises. Dao'an's Catalogue and Sengyou's Chu sanzang jiji both describe it thus as a standard model. Furthermore, there was the single title Vibhāṣā; in it, Kātyāyanīputra extracted its essential principles and cited scriptures to explain and interpret them, making the forty-four chapters of the Abhidharma; this too is a treatise.
