During the Northern Wei, Vinaya Master Facong had originally received the precepts through the Dharmaguptaka karmavācanā, but constantly studied the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya. One day, suddenly awakening to this, he sighed and said: "Since my essence was received through the Dharmaguptaka (Four-Part Vinaya), how can I follow a different school?" Thereupon he ceased lecturing on the Mahāsāṃghika-vinaya, personally opened and inspected [the texts], and propagated the Four-Part Vinaya. His disciple Daofu took notes as he listened, which gradually formed a doctrinal commentary; Master Fu was the beginning of expositing the Four-Part Vinaya. By the Yuanjia era of the Song, Huixun was skilled in the Mahāsāṃghika and Sarvāstivāda vinayas, and went on to compose articles and chapters; this was the beginning of expositing these two vinayas. Today, at the Northern Monastery of Mount Wutai, tradition preserves the traces of Master Cong's lectures on the vinaya.
