When the Dharma's words were newly translated, they had not yet penetrated ordinary minds. After repeated translation they became intelligible, and through further investigating the text to elucidate the principles, explanatory annotations were produced. The hidden and profound meanings thus became as clear as pointing to one's palm. The Wuyun tu says: "Kang Senghui commented on the Fajing jing during the Chiwu era of Wu." This was the beginning of commenting on sūtras. Furthermore, Dao'an's revised commentary on the Liaoben shengsi jing states: "In the early Wei, Zhi Gongming of Henan made a commentary for it." If that is so, then in the south Kang Senghui was the first, while in the north Zhi Gongming took the lead.
