The Sanskrit pronunciation in full is bhikṣuṇī, also called 'woman who removes famine'. In Tianzhu, it began with the Buddha's maternal aunt Mahāprajāpatī (translated as Great Love of the Way). The Commentary says: Nowadays calling a nun ayi ('maternal aunt') or shiyi ('teacher-aunt') imitates the Buddha calling Prajāpatī [his aunt]. Shigu ('teacher-aunt') is not yet explained. Nuns have the eight gurudharmas; being far removed from the Sage, these are no longer observed and practiced, so because of their length they are not recorded here.
