Name (ming) is reality; when reality is established, the name follows it. Zhongni said: 'What is prized is a name corresponding to reality.' Virtue (de) is attainment (de); it is the so-called attaining within oneself and attaining externally with others, never losing anything. They are combined in this designation. / The Āgama Sūtras refer to those from Śāriputra down as 'monks of eminent virtue'. / Master Jiao's preface to the Biographies of Eminent Monks says: 'Those of meager virtue who suit the times have fame (ming) but are not lofty (gao); those of true virtue who conceal their light are lofty but not famous.'
