This is a Sanskrit title, also rendered saṅghārāma; here translated as 'community garden'. The Mahīśāsaka Vinaya says: It began when King Bimbisāra offered the Karaṇḍa Bamboo Grove. A garden is a place where things are planted and grown; the Buddha's disciples dwell in it to signify the planting and growth of the root of the Way and the noble fruits. It is also called a vihāra, which is translated as a 'place of roaming and resting'.
