梵者清淨之義○經音云。梵云剌瑟致。此云竽。今略名剎。即幡柱也○長阿含經云。若沙門於此寺中勤苦。得一法者。便當竪幡告四遠。今有少欲知足人居此。

Brahma has the meaning of purity. / The Pronunciation and Meaning of the Scriptures says: In Sanskrit it is yaṣṭi; here translated as a pole. It is now abbreviated as cha, which is a banner pole. / The Dīrgha Āgama says: If a śramaṇa practices diligently in this monastery and attains a single dharma, he should erect a banner to announce to the four quarters: 'Here now dwells a person of few desires and contentment.'
